Educational Philosophy

I believe that a proper education should result in an insatiable passion for discovery. In order to accomplish this, education must be strongly relevant, deeply rooted in basic competencies, and highly personalized to each student’s needs and goals. With every assignment, my goal as a facilitator of the education process is always to spark creative inspiration in students. If you are a current of future student in one of my courses, you can expect to gain the following:

1. Fun, and lots it. Every child knows something that we adults often forget, that the best lessons, and the ones best learned, ignight our imaginations and creative passions. These lessons are, quite simply put, fun. There is a basic, raw connection between enjoyment and memory, and lessons that tap into that connection will be meaningful and long lasting. Students should wake up excited to go to school. They should gravitate to class as an escape from the monotony of the daily grind, not something that adds to it. Fun in education is not just important, it's essential.

2. A broader understanding of the humanities. To study the humanities is to study life. As we delve into various works, we will become more adept at analyzing human thought (perception, motivation, relation), unraveling philosophy (love, god, religion, existence), and examining social issues (racism, feminism, economics).

3. A deeper appreciation of various media. Our primary objective is to expand our understanding of how media (print, radio, film, video, multi-media) effect the humanities. You will learn about paradigm shifts and communication epochs, as well as becoming conversant with scores of rhetorical theories and philosophical applications. We will examine how we as human beings create and share meaning, how these meanings are affected by our limited and conditioned perspectives, and how we can expand or reassess those perspectives through the use of media.

4. Enhanced cultural literacy. Since perspective constitutes existence, we strive always to be aware of how we react to various materials. Likewise, we will work to become aware of the perspectives of members of other cultures. As we study together, you will expand your cultural literacy to include many writers (Plato, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Aldous Huxley, Neil Postman), philosophies (Taosim, Gnosticism, Existentialism, Post Modernism), events (American Revolution, Assassination of Malcolm X), and movements (the life of Jesus, Harlem Renaissance) that may be new to you. We will also learn about the lenses different societies and social subgroups use to view this same information.

5. Expanded personal cannon through diverse readings. As we read through various materials, you not only will expand your vocabulary and your ability to extract meaning from sophisticated syntax, but also will learn to infer information about audience and purpose, thus preparing yourself to interpret the complex, often veiled, messages you encounter in law, business, and the media.

6. Vigorous research skills. You will learn to complement the knowledge you absorb in class with knowledge you gather on your own through research. As such, one essential skill we will hone is judging and classifying the credibility of sources in new and immerging media. In addition to becoming familiar with both new and standard reference materials, you will polish several general research skills (paraphrasing, quoting, documenting).

7. Technological fluency. To complement these other skills, you will learn to make effective use of technology to find and share information. By the end of the course, you will be able to find material on the World Wide Web and communicate via audio, video and the internet.

8. Excellence in communication. Because of the allusive nature of all symbols, words and language, meanings can be shaped, often almost imperceptivity, in order to accomplish a rhetor’s purpose. As such, all students are expected foster within themselves a healthy sense of skepticism, even to the point of being suspicious of everything covered in class. A suspicious mind allows room for more discoveries. Through a variety of assignments and other activities, you will have the opportunity to develop essential skills in writing (argumentation, organization, editing), speaking (intonation, pronunciation) and interpersonal interaction (respect, listening). People are, by default, communicators. This means we must constantly discover effective means of articulation, focusing on, in this course, articulation through technology and the media.
